Dr W H Bates
Dr Bates' book could never be described as an easy read. It was compiled over about twenty years from articles and notes and it veers between the transparently lucid and the infuriatingly obscure. Absolutely required reading for anyone who wants to know what the method is about, but not necessarily the best book for beginners!

This is not a vision education textbook, but the autobiography of a man who was blinded as a child, before living through world War 2. it is listed here because it is possibly the best book ever written on seeing and the nature of perception - by a man who, for the greater part of his life, was totally blind.
